क्या आपको पता हैं? सन् 1964 में जब वह भारत के प्रधानमंत्री बने थे। तब भारत देश खाने की चीजे आयात करता था। उस वक्त देश PL-480 स्कीम के तहत नॉर्थ अमेरिका  अनाज के लिए विखियात था। 1965 में पाकिस्तान से जंग के बिच पूरे देश में भयंकर सूखा पड़ा तब के हालात देखते हुए उन्होंने देशवासियों से 1 दिन का उपवास रखने की अपील की इन्हीं हालातों से हमें जय जवान जय किसान का नारा प्राप्त हुआ।
